A Narrative History Podcast Medieval Travellers

On Human Circus: Journeys in the Medieval World, I take you along with medieval history's most interesting travellers, following merchants, friars, pilgrims, crusaders, envoys, and explorers.

We follow their stories into Mongol Karakorum, Timurid Samarkand, and Fatimid Cairo, into the Icelandic Sagas, the realm of Prester John, and the Indian Ocean. We meet Marco Polo, Ahmad ibn Fadlan, John Mandeville, Maimonides, Rabban bar Sauma, and many other fascinating characters.

What was travel like in the Middle Ages? What were the dangers of medieval travel? What did people of the time think of unfamiliar food, religion, or customs? Come find out!

Human Circus is researched, written, produced, and presented by Devon Field.
